Augustus Hiram Dearborn saw the need of a store in Barnes, a town of a few hundred people or less.
He gathered the limestone for the building
from his farm South of Barnes.
He also built a lime kiln used in the construction.
He called his business
"Barnes Mercantile"
and opened for business in 1895.
